6-month contract | Onsite in the Greater Vancouver Metropolitan Area | Hourly Rate: $63-73/hour | Must hold a valid Canadian Work Visa

Our client, a global technology organization, is seeking a Senior Java Backend Engineer for a 6-month contract supporting a large-scale account and digital services platform. This is a 100% onsite position in Vancouver, BC, with an expectation of five days per week in the office.

The successful candidate will join a team responsible for the backend services and data infrastructure powering a large digital account ecosystem and its integrations across multiple applications and services. The environment is highly cloud-native, with a strong focus on backend engineering, data engineering, distributed systems, APIs, microservices, and service reliability.

This role combines senior-level backend development with hands-on data engineering. The ideal candidate brings strong Java or Kotlin expertise, experience building scalable cloud-native services, and practical knowledge of ETL/ELT pipelines, databases, event-driven architectures, and distributed data systems. Engineers will work closely with data engineering and platform teams to build reliable services and support seamless data movement between operational and analytical environments.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain scalable backend services, APIs, and microservices within cloud-native environments
  • Develop high-quality backend applications primarily using Java/Kotlin and related technologies
  • Build and optimize data ingestion, transformation, and serving layers that integrate with backend applications and services
  • Design and support ETL/ELT pipelines and data workflows connecting operational and analytical systems
  • Collaborate closely with data engineering and platform teams to ensure reliable and efficient data movement across the environment
  • Design and implement event-driven architectures using technologies such as Kafka, Pub/Sub, SNS, and SQS
  • Work with relational databases such as PostgreSQL and MySQL, as well as NoSQL technologies including DynamoDB, Redis, and MongoDB
  • Develop and optimize complex SQL queries, including CTEs, window functions, and query performance optimization
  • Apply distributed systems principles, including data consistency, scalability, resiliency, and fault-tolerant design
  • Build and support containerized applications using Docker and Kubernetes
  • Develop and maintain services across cloud platforms, with a particular focus on GCP and Azure
  • Take ownership of service reliability, including monitoring, alerting, SLOs, troubleshooting, and incident response
  • Write clean, maintainable, well-documented code supported by comprehensive unit and integration testing
  • Participate in code reviews, architecture discussions, technical planning, and engineering design decisions
  • Contribute to improvements in CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code practices
  • Collaborate across backend, data, platform, and application teams to deliver scalable and reliable production services

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of professional backend software development experience, ideally with strong hands-on experience using Java and/or Kotlin
  • 2+ years of hands-on data engineering experience, including building ETL/ELT pipelines, working with data warehouses, and/or designing data models
  • Strong experience designing and developing backend services, REST APIs, and microservices
  • Experience building applications within cloud-native environments, with GCP and Azure preferred; AWS experience is also relevant
  • Strong experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL and NoSQL technologies such as DynamoDB, Redis, or MongoDB
  • Advanced SQL skills, including CTEs, window functions, and query optimization
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems, data consistency patterns, scalability, and fault-tolerant architecture
  • Hands-on experience with Docker and Kubernetes
  • Familiarity with data processing and orchestration technologies such as Spark, Flink, dbt, or Airflow
  • Experience with event-driven and streaming architectures using technologies such as Kafka or Pub/Sub is preferred
  • Familiarity with modern data lake architectures and technologies such as Apache Iceberg, Delta Lake, or Apache Hudi is an asset
  • Experience with domain-driven design and event sourcing is an asset
  • Experience developing APIs for mobile applications, including efficient pagination, payload optimization, and offline synchronization patterns, is an asset
  • Familiarity with FCM, APNs, and mobile-backend integration patterns is an asset
  • Experience with gRPC and Protobuf for high-performance service communication is an asset
  • Exposure to infrastructure-as-code technologies such as Terraform, CDK, or Pulumi is an asset
  • Strong understanding of software testing, code quality, CI/CD, monitoring, and production service reliability
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across backend, data engineering, and platform teams

NOTE: Interested candidates who meet the above qualifications are encouraged to apply directly. Due to the volume of applications, only those shortlisted will be contacted.
