Job Title: Purview Data Governance Engineer

6-month contract | Hybrid in Burnaby, BC

Our client is seeking a detail-oriented, hands-on Purview Data Governance Engineer to support the operational execution of an enterprise data governance strategy. This role partners closely with data governance leadership and works across multiple business domains to ensure data assets and data products are discoverable, trustworthy, and well-governed.

The position bridges business and technology by operationalizing Microsoft Purview (Unified Data Catalog), enabling data stewardship, and supporting data domains and data products across Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, and AWS S3 environments.

Responsibilities:

Metadata Management

  • Operationalize and maintain scanned assets in Microsoft Purview Unified Data Catalog, including Fabric Lakehouses and Warehouses, Pipelines, Power BI semantic models, AWS S3 datasets, and key enterprise source systems.
  • Configure and optimize scanning by business domain, including scan rulesets, integration runtimes, and secure credentials.
  • Curate metadata at scale by capturing business and technical metadata, descriptions, ownership, and contacts using standardized templates.
  • Apply and validate classifications and sensitivity labels (e.g., PII, financial, regulated data) using Microsoft Information Protection integrations where applicable.
  • Establish custom attributes (e.g., data product SLOs, domain ownership, retention tiers) to enhance search, discovery, and governance workflows.
  • Maintain data dictionaries, canonical business definitions, and glossary entries to ensure consistent terminology across assets.

Data Domains & Data Products Setup and Curation

  • Establish and maintain business data domains aligned to Purview collections and Fabric workspaces, including ownership models, roles, and access boundaries.
  • Define and manage data product lifecycles (ideation, design, validation, certification, release, versioning, and deprecation).
  • Develop and enforce data product standards covering purpose, ownership, definitions, lineage, SLAs/SLOs, quality metrics, and consumers.
  • Publish, certify, and label reusable data products (e.g., Fabric tables/views, warehouses, Power BI semantic models) with clear usage guidance.
  • Define and track data product SLOs (freshness, completeness, accuracy, timeliness, uptime) and align monitoring with operational processes.
  • Promote adoption of domain-oriented governance and data product thinking across business units.

Data Stewardship Support (Collaboration with Data Product Owners)

  • Engage business representatives across multiple domains to gather requirements related to definitions, ownership, access visibility, and usage policies.
  • Onboard and enable data stewards within Purview, including training on metadata templates, glossary workflows, and approval processes.
  • Facilitate workshops, interviews, and data product reviews to capture domain context and prioritize governance backlogs.

Governance Operations, Compliance & Policy

  • Monitor compliance with classification, retention, and access visibility standards; surface insights through governance dashboards.
  • Support data access governance policies to ensure alignment between defined standards and operational practices.

Continuous Improvement & Enablement

  • Contribute to playbooks, SOPs, and templates covering metadata management, lineage curation, glossary governance, and data product certification.
  • Identify opportunities to improve metadata quality, search relevance, and curation workflows.
  • Support change management initiatives for new governance standards, tooling enhancements, and domain onboarding through communications and training materials.

Qualifications:

Required Experience

  • 3–5 years of experience as a Business Analyst, Data Analyst, Data Governance Analyst, or in a related role.
  • Hands-on experience with enterprise analytics and data catalog platforms, preferably Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, and Microsoft Purview.
  • Working knowledge of data governance concepts, including metadata management, classification, stewardship, and glossary management.
  • Experience working with cloud data lake or storage environments (e.g., AWS S3, lakehouse architectures).

Technical & Analytical Skills

Microsoft Purview (Data Map / Unified Data Catalog)

  • Create and manage metadata templates, glossary terms, classifications, and business attributes.
  • Configure collections, roles, scan rulesets, integration runtimes, and credentials.
  • Leverage Purview insights and catalog coverage reporting to drive continuous improvement.

Apache Atlas–Compatible APIs (via Purview)

  • Familiarity with REST-based metadata operations including bulk entity upserts, partial updates, classification assignments, and lineage retrieval.
  • Understanding of entity GUIDs, typedefs, relationships, process entities, and business metadata JSON structures.
  • Exposure to automation using Python or PowerShell for metadata loading, stewardship assignments, and quality checks.

Fabric / Power BI

  • Understanding of the development lifecycle for semantic models, ETL pipelines, report lineage, and usage patterns.

Data Engineering Literacy

  • Ability to read, interpret, and work with SQL, Spark, or ETL logic at a functional level.

Key Success Measures

Initial focus will be on onboarding a priority data domain into Purview, followed by additional enterprise data domains. Success will be measured using Purview’s built-in reporting and governance KPIs, including:

  • Improved catalog coverage and metadata curation
  • Stronger trusted data and certified data products
  • Mature data domains with high discoverability
  • Effective stewardship engagement and glossary health
  • Faster domain and data product onboarding
  • Strong compliance posture and lifecycle governance

NOTE: Interested candidates who meet the above qualifications are encouraged to apply directly. Due to the volume of applications, only those shortlisted will be contacted.
