Job Title: Senior Java Backend Engineer
12-month contract | Hybrid in the Greater Vancouver Metropolitan Area | Must hold a valid Canadian Work Visa
Our client, a global technology-enabled marketplace and financial services organization, is seeking a Senior Java Backend Engineer for an initial 12-month contract with the potential for ongoing extensions. You will join an established engineering team that is continuing to expand and work on enterprise-scale applications and integrations.
This is a backend software engineering role, not a traditional Salesforce Developer position. The successful candidate will design and build scalable microservices, APIs, and integration services connecting Salesforce with other enterprise applications, platforms, and external services.
The technical environment is centered around Java/Kotlin, Spring Boot, microservices, REST APIs, Test-Driven Development (TDD), event-driven architecture, CI/CD, Kubernetes, and observability. The team is looking for an engineer with strong software development fundamentals who can take ownership of complex technical problems from design through production.
Salesforce integration experience is beneficial but is not the primary requirement. The priority is finding a strong senior Java/backend engineer who has built scalable, reliable distributed systems and enterprise integrations.
Responsibilities:
-
Design, develop, test, and support backend microservices and integration services using Java/Kotlin and Spring Boot
- Build APIs and services connecting Salesforce with enterprise applications, internal platforms, and external services
- Take ownership of technical solutions from initial design and architecture through development, testing, deployment, and production support
- Write clean, maintainable, highly testable, and scalable production code
-
Apply Test-Driven Development (TDD) and automated testing practices throughout the development lifecycle
- Design and develop scalable APIs and microservices capable of supporting high-volume production workloads
- Build asynchronous and event-driven integrations using messaging, pub/sub, and related architectural patterns
- Implement appropriate patterns for message ordering, retries, error handling, resiliency, and data consistency
- Develop and operate production microservices with strong observability, monitoring, logging, and reliability practices
-
Contribute to high-availability and zero-downtime deployment approaches for services and databases
- Develop automated API, integration, contract, performance, and load tests
- Participate in code reviews and provide constructive technical feedback to other engineers
- Provide technical leadership and contribute to software architecture and engineering decisions
- Mentor other team members and help improve engineering standards and development practices
- Work with Product Owners to translate high-level business requirements into technical solutions, tasks, and estimates
- Collaborate with Software Engineers, QA Engineers, DevOps/Support Engineers, Solution Architects, and business stakeholders
- Participate in Agile development activities including Scrum ceremonies, backlog refinement, estimation, and retrospectives
- Troubleshoot complex application and integration issues and assist with critical production incidents when required
- Evaluate emerging technologies and identify opportunities to improve platform scalability, reliability, maintainability, and developer productivity
Qualifications:
-
5+ years of professional software development experience with a strong focus on Java/backend engineering
-
Strong hands-on development experience with Java and/or Kotlin and Spring Boot
-
Proven experience designing and developing microservices, REST APIs, and enterprise integrations
-
Strong understanding of software architecture, distributed systems, and scalable application design
-
Experience with Test-Driven Development (TDD) and automated testing
-
Experience with modern CI/CD and DevOps practices
- Strong software design, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to independently take ownership of technical solutions from design through production
- Strong communication skills and experience collaborating within cross-functional engineering teams
Nice to Have
-
Salesforce integration experience, including Platform Events or Change Data Capture (CDC)
-
Kafka or other event-driven and messaging technologies
- Kubernetes and Helm
- Boomi or other enterprise integration platforms
- Oracle EBS or Oracle Fusion Cloud integration experience
-
Experience with observability tools such as Datadog or Honeycomb
- Experience building high-throughput, highly available services and supporting zero-downtime deployments
-
Experience integrating LLM or Generative AI APIs into production applications
Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate is a Senior Java Backend Engineer with strong Java/Kotlin, Spring Boot, microservices, and API development experience. You have personally designed and delivered backend services and integrations in complex production environments and are comfortable owning your work throughout the full development lifecycle.
You should be prepared to discuss systems you have personally designed or built, particularly around microservices, APIs, integrations, scalability, and distributed systems. The interview process will place emphasis on understanding the technical decisions you made, the trade-offs you considered, your testing approach, and how you moved solutions from design into production.
NOTE: Interested candidates who meet the above qualifications are encouraged to apply directly. Due to the volume of applications, only those shortlisted will be contacted.
